For the children
I had an unsettling conversation today. One that’s left that unshakable bitter taste lingering long after the phone was put down. One that both broke my heart and raised my blood pressure. One that affirmed my concerns and shook my sense of humanity.“Your children have more than they need.”And for this statement, this accusation- our children were penalised. And I want to rage. But as angry as I am with the mere utterance of this sentence and the punitive nature of the consequences thereof; the problem is that children’s suffering has become a performative fund raising strategy. And in failing to align with this narrative and by refusing this to be our operative function, I am effectively prejudicing our kids in an unintended way. That’s not to say that we couldn’t litter these pages with gut-wrenching images all day - we could. We choose not to because our kids are not the singular moments that brought them into our home. They are not the worst thing that happened. They are not abuse. They are not poverty. They are not neglect. They are not rape or trafficking or violence. They are heroes who are healing loudly and showing many of us the true strength of the human spirit. And that isn’t always comfortable for some people. So for now sleep with a queasy uneasiness of remembering that there are people in this world that really do believe that kids in care deserve no more than basic. No amount of evidence will show them different. But I also lay my head down tonight knowing that the children in our home are exactly where they are because though a select few believe they’re not worth more than a bowl of soup- YOU do. You back this crazy home and hold these outrageously successful programs up and that is more beautiful than any rejection we could ever face. I sleep grateful beyond measure for every one who believes that their future, not just their rescue, is worth investing in. One day when these children look back, I hope they’ll remember not their life being ruined by a singular event- but a childhood worth remembering. And that is worth all my gratitude and thanks. 🙏 ...
